Being tall can be a beautiful thing. But if you grew up feeling like you stood out before you'd even said a word, you probably know that feeling confident in your height isn't always as simple as someone telling you to “embrace it”.
Maybe you were the tallest in your friendship group. Maybe shopping for trousers meant choosing between a good fit at the waist and a hem that actually reached your shoes. Maybe you've heard “You're so tall!” more times than you can count.
Here at She So Fit, we think tall girls deserve more than clothes that are merely long enough. You deserve to feel comfortable taking up space. So this first edition of Tall Girl Talks is about the little things that make a real difference—both in your wardrobe and in your head.
1. You don't have to make yourself smaller
Notice how often you lean down in pictures, hunch slightly around shorter friends or avoid certain shoes because they might make you stand out? You don't need to correct your posture overnight. Just start noticing when you're doing it.
Your height isn't an inconvenience for anyone else to manage. Stand comfortably, let your shoulders relax and allow yourself to be seen as you are.
2. Stop blaming your body for clothes that don't fit
If you've ever ordered the “tall” version of a pair of trousers only to find they're still too short, you'll know how frustrating that can be. But the problem isn't your legs, your hips or your proportions. It's the cut of the clothes.
A good fit can make getting dressed feel so much easier. Look at the actual inseam, not just the word “tall” on the label. Check how a top sits through the torso, where the waistband lands and whether the sleeves move comfortably when you lift your arms.
Not sure where to begin? Our tall women's size and inseam guide explains the Long and Extra Long options used at She So Fit. It's worth measuring a pair of trousers you already love too. That number is a lot more useful than guessing.
3. Wear the heels. Or don't. Make it your choice.
There's nothing wrong with loving a flat trainer. There's also nothing wrong with wanting the boots with a heel.
The point is that your height shouldn't be the thing making the decision for you. If an outfit feels like you, wear it. You don't need to dress down your presence to make someone else comfortable.
4. Have a few outfits you can always rely on
Confidence isn't always a big, dramatic transformation. Sometimes it's simply opening your wardrobe and knowing you've got something that fits and feels good.
Build a few easy outfit combinations around your everyday life: a matching set with trainers for errands, wide-leg trousers with a fitted top for lunch, or a soft co-ord you can dress up with jewellery and a jacket.
When the proportions are right, you spend less time pulling at sleeves and checking whether your trousers have crept up. You get to focus on your day instead.
5. Dress for your shape, not somebody else's rules
Tall women aren't one body type. Some of us are slim, some curvy, some athletic, and many of us are a combination of all three. Having long legs doesn't automatically mean you want the same cut as every other tall woman.
Try different rises, silhouettes and fabrics. Pay attention to how you feel in something, not just what looks good on a model. A wide-leg fit might become your favourite. Or you might prefer a shape that follows your waist and hips. Both count.
And if you love a matching set, browse our tall flare and co-ord sets or tall tracksuits for a little outfit inspiration. No complicated styling formula required.
6. Have a response ready for the height comments
Not every comment about your height is unkind. Still, being asked about it constantly can get tiring.
You don't owe anyone a conversation about your body. A quick “Yep, I've always been tall”, a smile, or simply changing the subject is enough. You can be polite without feeling obliged to explain yourself.
7. Let confidence look different on different days
Some days you'll love being the tallest person in the room. Other days you might just want to blend in. Both are normal.
Confidence doesn't mean loving every part of yourself every minute. It means learning not to put your life on hold until you feel a certain way. Wear the outfit. Take the picture. Go to the event. You can feel a little nervous and still enjoy yourself.
A little reminder from She So Fit
You don't have to earn the right to feel good in your clothes by changing your body or your height. Finding pieces that fit properly can help, but the best part is what happens when you stop adjusting yourself to fit the clothes—or the room.
Here's to standing tall, getting dressed without the drama and feeling more like yourself.
With love, the She So Fit team.
